Light From Africa Foundation showcased at Michelle Obama’s VIP vendor event

When Michelle Obama made plans to visit Cape Town in June 2011, the American Embassy put together a VIP vendor event in her honour.

The event aimed to showcase the best of South African art and craft whilst specifically looking at projects with a philanthropic objective. The Light From Africa Foundation was delighted to be selected as one of just 8 projects highlighted at this event where our team put on a fantastic display for delegates and VIP guests alike. With an opportunity to show our Bright Ideas to the American market, it was heartwarming to receive huge interest in our vision and creativity! A BIG thank you to the Consul General Alberta Mayberry as well as event co-ordinator Kristin Burkhalter for choosing us to represent our country at such an important event.

Patricia De Lille visits Light From Africa Foundation at ‘Art in the Forest’

On 7 May, the Light From Africa Foundation was delighted to host Cape Town City Mayor, Patricia De Lille as the honored opening speaker at the Mad Potters Tea Party exhibition.  It was a joyous moment for the Light From Africa team and patrons to hear Patricia’s support of the ART IN THE FOREST project as well as her vision for the relief of child headed households in the Western Cape.

The incredible selection of artists whose work was shown in this fun and accessible exhibition of teapots, were able to contribute towards Light From Africa Foundation simply through choosing to show and sell their work at our gallery.

This is one of the key messages behind our ongoing ‘call out’ to creatives.  We believe anyone, anywhere can make a difference and continue to appeal to ordinary citizens who may feel they are not in a position to get involved as well as artists and designers of all ages, cultures and levels of talent to contribute their creativity, skills and time in support of South African children affected by HIV/AIDS.

MAD New York visits ART in the FOREST -March 2011

In March 2011, the MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN NEW YORK hosted a group of patrons on a cultural tour of South Africa in celebration of ‘The Global Africa Project’ exhibition. Hosted by Director, Holly Hotchner as well as Co-Curators of exhibition, Lowery Sims and Lesley King-Hammond, MAD’s visit to South Africa was centered on visits to many of the studios of artists represented as well as a deep look at the rich culture of artisanship in the country.

The Light From Africa Foundation was delighted to be selected as not only an art project to be highlighted to the group, but also as hosts when our ART HUB in Cecilia Forest was selected as a dinner venue for the group.  MAD New York were introduced to the Light From Africa vision whilst experiencing Cape Town at its aesthetic best!  Surrounded by works by the leading South African ceramic artists, the group enjoyed a breathtaking sunset over the peninsula followed by dinner in the gallery at ART IN THE FOREST.

Guests were treated to a fine array of fresh seasonal cuisine prepared by Cath and Norma (The Great Cooks) whilst chatting to local artists and art dealers before having an opportunity to shop for handmade treasures in the gallery and boutique above.
